The 3.3 km long single lane concrete bridge, with 8 passing zones, linking Ilha de Moçambiue to the mainland, is supported on 994 piles. The bridge which was built in the 1960’s had to undergo rehabilitation in 2002. The rehabilitation started with Emergency Repairs in 2002 and the Contract was in 3 Phases which ran to 2009. The scope of services provided by SWMoz included:
- • 252 vertical columns
- • 193 inclined columns
- • 21 columns requiring collars
- • 187 pile caps
- • 54 diaphragm beams
- • 2235 repairs to the underside of the bridge deck
- • 20 sm to the bridge walkways
- • 72 bridge joints (excluding the sealing of these joints still to be done)
- • 17 replacement bearings
- • 5518 new horizontal sections of handrail each approximately 2m long
- • 2312 new handrail posts including grouting
- • 24 horizontal handrail rails (approx 2 m long) repaired using old pieces
- • Improvements to approach embankments at each end of the bridge
- • Improvements to the guardhouses and provision of new booms at each end of the bridge
- • Street lighting was provided on the bridge
